Hi y’all. This week I have some exciting news about the podcast. At least, I hope it is exciting. We are gearing up to begin a second podcast in 2020 called Disabled is Not Broken. We don’t have an official launch date quite yet, but we do have a firm idea about what the podcast will be about. The first few episodes will be about our specific disabilities because we have a handful each and get lots of questions about our various illnesses. We plan to do each illness/disability as their own episode because they are very complicated and have a very big impact. We also plan to unpack the whole “is a chronic illness a disability?” discussion and share our point of view. Chad and I both work and that requires a great deal of managing our bodies, symptoms, medication, and doctors. We have very different approaches to that, and I think that will be interesting. We plan to mix it up a bit by having the occasional guest on the show to talk about their own disability and how it impacts their life. We don’t have any guests firmly locked in quite yet but loads of ideas for guest. We are really excited about adding a second podcast. Disabled is Not Broken will have its home on our website, just like The Musicks in Japan.
The reason we want to do Disabled is Not Broken is because we want that message to get out into the world. We are aware that there are a lot of amazing folks spreading this message, and we want to add our voices to the movement that says we are disabled but our disability does not mean we have less value. A lot of folks choose to not have surgery or interventions that would “cure” their disability. There are a lot of folks who are ok with their disability. Being disabled is different but not wrong for a lot of people and I happened to be one of those people. These are the types of things we will explore on Disabled is Not Broken. We will also explore the difference between ignorance, bias, and ableism. We imagine that this podcast may be a bit more controversial than the Musicks in Japan but we will try to approach it with the same exuberance that we have on TMIJ. We basically just feel that it is time to share more of ourselves and our lives with all you wonderful people. So keep an eye out for Disabled is Not Broken, coming in 2020. I’m sure we will keep you posted on our twitter and here in the website with how we progressing in terms of launch date, art, and recording, and all that good stuff.
